Our History

In the spring of 2009 a small number of people took a leap of faith and began meeting in a run-down movie theater in Dunn, North Carolina. The idea was to reach the community of Dunn and Campbell University with an upbeat worship time and laid back atmosphere. Theater Church had many ups and downs its first few years. There was no consistent leadership for the members attending. Even though the people were not sure of the future for the church, God was at work in the life of a plumbing salesman.

For two years, this man struggled with the idea that God was calling him into the ministry. In July of 2009 Pastor Sean Bass obeyed God and surrendered his life. He attended seminary and became intern pastor at the Theater Church. Pastor Sean remained faithful and preached the Gospel of Jesus every Sunday. The Theater began to grow in attendance and quickly outgrew its facility. The church was in desperate need of space. In 2013 the leaders began to pray and look into other locations for the church, and it wasn’t long before an opportunity was presented.

In 1938 East Erwin Baptist Church was established. In the early days the church was flourishing, but over time, like many churches the leadership began to decline. The church was left with many different pastors along with many different opinions on how things should operate. Slowly the church dwindled down to a handful of faithful members who still loved the church and wanted to do all they could to see their parents’ church alive again. At the time, a stand-in pastor was shepherding these few members. This pastor also knew pastor Sean and they began to meet and pray over the two congregations merging. On a beautiful day, July 22, 2014, Redemption Hill Church held its first service! The merging of these two bodies of believers could not have been more seamless. God’s hand was on this process from day one.

The church is growing and disciples are being made to the glory of God. The “Hill” even held its first Easter service in the community park. Over 150 people came out to hear the gospel of Jesus proclaimed. Redemption Hill is now sending out its first missionaries to China and other parts of the world and God is continuing to do glorious things in and through this local body of believers. The gospel continues to be preached every Sunday. Small Groups and Bible studies are held weekly with the intent of creating disciples and building a gospel centered community. Children’s and Teen’s ministries are growing with little ones and teenagers being discipled to go and tell the good news of Jesus. Each week God is drawing people into His church. Redemption Hill is truly a miracle of God’s grace and mercy and by His grace we will continue to proclaim the gospel and make His name famous in our community and abroad.

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
-Matthew 28:18-20
